I'm very happy to see online Pali-English and Chinese-English dictionaries at Sutta Central. Great work!

While appreciating very much the very helpful listing of Chinese agama parallels on the website (which has greatly facilitated my sutta study), I happen to notice today that MA 189 is listed as the Chinese agama parallel of MN 117, and wonder if SA 785 and SA 789 can also be considered as partial parallels to MN 117. In MA 189 only one path (a kind of "hybrid" path with the supramundane right view missing) and twenty factors were actually there, although “the Great Forty” (“twenty factors on the side of the wholesome, and twenty factors on the side of the unwholesome”) was mentioned there as in MN 117. In both SA 785 and SA 789 the two paths (mundane and supramundane) similar to those in MN 117 were seen, with the four noble truths (missing in MN 117) preserved before the mentioning of the mental factors for the path factors in the supramundane path. I thought that SA 785 and SA 789 could help the readers to understand the important and controversial MN 117.

More details on the comparison can be seen at http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=22..., if interested. I've just checked that page (using Chrome) and no problem. Try another browser and see if that helps. Chrome automatically substitutes diacritical/plain forms of letters, so searching for "nivarana" and "nīvaraṇa" yield the same results. I'm not sure if other browsers do this. Since the staff here is intending to implement the Chinese Āgamaliterature onto SuttaCentral, I thought it might be useful if I shared this here for a possible cooperation with the site's maintainer. Maybe it might be possible to help English-only readers by integrating a dictionary similar to the Pāḷi one. If this specific idea is not possible due to some kind of constraint, maybe some other kind of cooperation might, nevertheless, be possible. I'm not sure whether you still have the ability to link to specific lines of text in the new version, as you do in the old.

Sujato Bhikkhu svarede:
All good points, I have to admit. I had been using things like this manuscript from Dunhuang as template. I can't really say, but it does seem as if the "vertical lines" layout is more common. But it is definitely a good point about the conjoined characters used for Indic terms; it was in fact these that I was thinking of when I said there were exceptions to the rule that each character is one word. Perhaps the ideal thing would be to group characters semantically; but this would be a vast job, and not really in line with how the characters are used. I'll seek feedback from some other users, and make the change if it seems useful.
Qianxihttps://suttacentral.userecho.com/users/21-qianxi/topics/tag:suttacentral.userecho.com,2014-07-23:/communities/1/topics/37-links-to-cbetaorg/2014-07-23T12:43:46+00:002014-07-23T12:43:46+00:00Links to cbeta.org [spørgsmål] [under vurdering]Just wondering if the removal of links to Chinese texts on cbeta.org is a bug or something else. On the search results page, is it possible to show ALL results and divide it into pages like google? I searched for a fairly common word and it seems to have a max of 15 results. Would also be nice to have some options for number of results per page (eg. 10, 50, 100).

Second. Could you order the results by their appearance in the Tripitaka? If you search for appamada, for example, there are results from AN and SN mixed together and numerically out of order.

Third. When you type in a word into the search field in the top right corner of the page, it instantaneously starts to show results in an overlay. It might be helpful to have an indication there of how many total results there are such as "showing partial results of X total."

Four. This is more of a nice to have. In the search results page, could you show the word and a small amount of the surrounding text for each result? Two reasons: 1) when searching through results from the SN this would make it easier to skim over repetitive uses of the word. 2) I may want to find the word used in certain combinations or contexts. And many words have multiple uses (dhamma, sankhara).

And just so you know where these requests are coming from, I'm planning to use this to find examples of pali words in context so I can better understand their meaning. The group can make the best possible "translations", with footnotes, and put them on this site, so that there'll be no copy right issue, and we'll have access to even better versions of the suttas online.

Thanks for all your good work, and mega metta!

Starter

Sujato Bhikkhu svarede:
Hi Starter,

We have a number of Bhante Anandajoti's translations here; he's a friend of SuttaCentral, and an excellent scholar, and I have tried to get all of his translations that are relevant. But we haven't included his translations from MN, SN, or AN, for the simple reason that we are still hoping to host the complete translations by Bhikkhu Bodhi. He is very supportive of this, but we have been unable to persuade the publishers, so far at least.

Anandajoti's word by word translations wouldn't work on SuttaCentral, as we only have whole texts. But if we are missing any of his translations, please let us know.

As for having all available translations, we have quite a range, but not all. I know that many people like having various translations available. But in my opinion in almost all cases one or other of the translations is clearly superior. Regardless of one's personal preferences as to style and so on, there's just a basic question of understanding and accurately representing the underlying text. There are a few exceptions to this, notably in the few cases where a specially popular text like the Dhammapada or the Satipatthana Sutta has been ably translated by several hands. I would like to aim to have one good translation of every text hosted on SuttaCentral, and ideally, consistent translations of entire collections, rather than individual suttas.

Currently I'm in Sri Lanka, and having discussions and doing research towards hosting Sinhala translations of the Pali canon, and possibly one or two other texts as well.Starter Starterhttps://suttacentral.userecho.com/users/26-starter-starter/topics/tag:suttacentral.userecho.com,2013-12-06:/communities/1/topics/3-can-you-expand-this-to-comentries-also-sinhala-burmese-and-siamese-texts-can-be-an-addition/2013-12-06T16:49:49+00:002013-12-06T16:49:49+00:00Can you expand this to comentries. But we have to restrict our scope somewhere, so at the moment we plan to expand to include the Vinaya and Abhidhamma, including the remainder of the Khuddka Nikaya, but not the commentaries. It all just gets too much! Also, the commentarial literature is mostly restricted to one tradition, so there's not much benefit to be gained from SuttaCentral's special focus on the parallels. Nevertheless, it certainly is convenient to be able to swiftly look up the commentary for a passage, so perhaps some time in the future we might look at that.

We have been actively seeking translations of the Pali texts in Sinhala, Burmese, and Thai, as you suggest. In fact today I was having some discussions about the Burmese translations. We call this a kind of "partial parallel". However this blanket term in fact represents several different kinds of relationships. This specific sort is what we call an "embedded parallel": one sutta is "embedded" in another. A recent innovation we made was to represent these embedded passages explicitly in the target text. See, for example, SF177. This is found on this page: http://suttacentral.net/sf/ If you click on the text, it takes you to this page, with the actual parallel text highlighted: http://suttacentral.net/sf177/skt/#1 Neat, huh? This feature has not yet been rolled out for all our texts, as we need to mark the divisions in the actual files.
Zikun Thymehttps://suttacentral.userecho.com/users/10-zikun-thyme/topics/tag:suttacentral.userecho.com,2013-10-23:/communities/1/topics/40-this-document-lists-lots-of-chinese-sutta-nipata-parallels/2013-10-23T02:14:55+00:002013-10-23T02:14:55+00:00This document lists lots of Chinese Sutta Nipata parallels [idéer]

This pdf lists lots of Chinese Sutta Nipata parallels, most of them not yet listed on your site. The intro is in Japanese but you don't need Japanese to understand the index.

Yajima, Michihiko (矢島道彦)

„Suttanipata対応句索引“ [An Index to Parallel Verses and Padas of the Suttanipata collected from Buddhist, Jain, and Brahmanical Texts]. - In:Bulletin of the Institute of Buddhist Culture, Tsurumi University. - 2 (1997), 1, S. 1-97.

URL: http://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/110004777657 (CiNii)

Sujato Bhikkhu svarede:

Hi Qianxi,

I've been on retreat for a couple of weeks, hence the slow reply.

The DA21 text is really just a test case I threw together so we can see how the dictionary works.
